Stoke Fleming is a village just 2 miles out of Dartmouth on one of the most attractive areas of coastline in Devon. It is very centrally positioned for exploring the South Hams and wider area.
Dartmouth is a unique town with a remarkable waterside location. It is a busy port full of interesting shops and restaurants. It is also the home of Britannia Royal Naval College with its wealth of naval history.
The beautiful beach of Blackpool Sands is a 3 minute drive (20 minute walk) from Fairholme. This award winning beach offers watersports, an organic café, parking, showers and shop. Lifeguards (usually Australian!) operate throughout the summer season.
12 miles up the River Dart is the historic market town of Totnes, easily reached by river or road. It has winding streets, a vibrant market and ancient castle.
12 miles along the coast is Kingsbridge, a market town at the head of the Kingsbridge/Salcombe estuary with good shopping, boat trips and waterside eateries.
Further along is the elegant town of Salcombe which looks across to the pretty beaches of East Portlemouth with beautiful scenery, sandy beaches, excellent shops and restaurants.
Across the ferry from Dartmouth is the vibrant Torbay. It is quite a contrast to our side of the river, full of bright lights, hustle and bustle and many attractions for all the family.
Slapton Sands extends for 3 miles of golden shingle. Across the coast road is Slapton Ley – a freshwater lake with an abundance of flora and fauna and plenty of hungry ducks, swans and geese!
Castle Cove and Sugary Cove are totally unspoilt rocky coves at the mouth of the River Dart. There are some steps to climb down, but it is worth it to enjoy the tranquil rugged beauty of the area. You can catch a boat to the centre of Dartmouth for £1.50!
Further afield visit Bantham and Bigbury on Sea. Take the sea tractor across to Burgh Island at hightide or walk across at low tide.
The South West Coast Path runs just in front of Fairholme, with breathtaking views of the coastal area. The Dartmouth Castle estate has woodland walks overlooking the mouth of the River Dart and out to sea. Walk beside the steam railway line at Kingswear or drive to unspoilt Dartmoor.
When you want a change from the beach or should you get a rainy day there are plenty of attractions locally.
